Looking through some of my old notes today. Here is an observation I wrote a few years ago that relates to this topic:
The kings of Israel mostly led the tribes of Israel away from God. Does that mean that God abandoned His people or that they should have started a new religion? The evil of these men had not impact on the promises of God to his people.
I.love this, especially: "Choose a snuffling or gabbling priest or a proud and vulgar friar; and a church full of the usual bourgeois crowd, ill-behaved children – from those who yell to those products of Catholic schools who the moment the tabernacle is opened sit back and yawn – open necked and dirty youths, women in trousers and often with hair both unkempt and uncovered. Go to Communion with them (and pray for them)."
Same here! Actualy I was smiling while reading it. This article hit the nail on the head, meaning a rusted bent nail, which is me. I'm having hard time going to mass in some churches near me, and watching the abuse and disregard, disrespect for Our Lord, during adoration! , during mass! By the the priests and the parishioners. Being an old man, born, raised catholic, my first 12 years was going to Latin Mass, priests was much holy, they spoke about Sin, Hell, nothing like today, when they're so afraid of causing damage to the collection baskets. Bishops? Well you get my drift. But who am I to say or criticizing them! I have zealous for the faith, don't like how the clergy is leading the sheep to hell. Please pray for me, a sinner!
I can say, as a TLM attender, that while a higher level of reverence is "baked in", external social attitudes still leak in. The rector recently had to ask parents not to let their children run around in church, and to be considerate if a baby is crying and go out. I can attest to serious frustration at feral children wandering around noisily!
I was once accused of being "anti-pro-life" for saying children should have discipline in church. And Tolkien's challenge was written before the NO, so he would agree with you.
I feel the same way as a Novus Ordo attendee, though unfortunately I never had the chance to attend the Latin Mass (hopefully someday!). It's a painful situation, one which Tolkien had to endure firsthand as you did during the early transformation of the Mass.
Not sure where you live, but you may find a priest that does celebrate the TLM. And yore right, the transformation wasn't so bad, or I didn't noticed because I was young and you know, when young we adapt very easy with changes, plus, I'm from Brazil, and the change was not so quickly. Til one day all the saints statues and pictures was removed, some was covered, that was very detrimental to all, we dint have protestants around, not in the cities around whete our farm was. So, some priests refused to do it, and continue celebrating the mass facing East, but on our native language. Than the new modern young priests starting appear and he'll broke loose, it's right, Satan took over the seminary, just as he did on the public schrewools. But, we need to stay firm, go on our knees and pray, not jointing the feminists, but praying for them. Two realy bad things happened after Vatican II; COMUNION ON HAND, not knealing And not the incoming of women covering their heads with vail, or hats. Right behind it, came the half naked ones, totally a disgrace. I blame all on the Bishops, they became money hunnters, not a fisherman of souls, Where are they ???
I'm sorry you had to endure all of that, sir. As you said, much of it was top-down from the bishops. Hopefully one day the Church will repent of its errors and restore Tradition and reverence.
Well, long time has passed! All is on the Lord's Hands, the Holy Spirit will bring the church to where it should be, we just got pray hard ! Be well and a Blessed New Year!
It’s certainly challenging, and was written in 1963, before the institution of the Novus Ordo, so it applies to all liturgical situations for Catholics.

Excellent point, Armando. I believe Tolkien also viewed it this way.

That really resonates!
